Angiotensin II, Human

Angiotensin II is an endocrine, autocrine/paracrine, and intracrine hormone formed from the conversion of angiotensin I via angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). It increases blood pressure by vasoconstriction, sympathetic nervous stimulation, increased aldosterone biosynthesis, and Gq protein stimulation in vascular smooth muscle. Also acts as a Na/H exchanger in the proximal tubules of the kidney, increasing blood sodium content and leading to increased blood volume, pressure and pH. Thus ACE inhibitors are considered anti-hypertensives.
