Biological Information
Background Information:
NEK1 (NIMA-related kinase 1) is a serine/threonine protein kinase that is involved in a variety of cellular processes, including DNA damage response, cell cycle progression, and cilia function. NEK1 has been shown to be involved in the regulation of DNA damage response, including repair of double-strand breaks, and mutations in NEK1 have been linked to several diseases, including cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. Research has suggested that NEK1 plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity of the primary cilium, which is a sensory organelle present on the surface of most mammalian cells. Dysfunction of primary cilia has been linked to a wide range of developmental and disease-related conditions, including polycystic kidney disease and retinal degeneration. NEK1 has also been suggested as a potential therapeutic target in cancer, and efforts to develop small-molecule inhibitors of the kinase are underway.
