Produced by CD4+ T helper cells, it stimulates cell proliferation, prevents apoptosis, and regulates hematopoietic cells. Acts as an agonist of the interleukin-9 receptor (IL9R) and activates the STAT proteins. Implicated in asthma and the pathogenesis of bronchial hyperresponsiveness.
