Mechanism-based toxicity signatures, developed with data from human-based in vitro platforms, was used to assess test agents – including environmental chemicals – for potential to induce pharmacologic outcomes in humans. Since these toxicity signatures have been characterized for potential target mechanisms, this approach can be used to better understand toxicity mechanisms. Future areas of investigation include: (1) establishing relationships of concentrations tested to likely exposures; (2) evaluating the role of compound metabolism; and (3) assessing the correlation of these results (in human systems) with available animal toxicology studies.
